OXSILAN® AL-0500
A Product of Chemetall US, Inc.
OXSILAN AL-0500 is a conversion coating free of (both hexavalent Cr+ 6 and trivalent Cr+ 3) chromium (or chromate) ions; therefore easily meeting and exceeding all EPA standards including the more extensive standards set by California and Europe's RoHS.
OXSILAN AL-0500 is for coating aluminum, yet, also works well on magnesium and zinc providing unpainted corrosion protection in modest conditions. Once applied and dry this product creates super adhesion properties for paint and other organic coatings. Approved or meets specification requirements of MIL-C-5541 and MIL-DTL-81706 of the US Military.
One other important feature, OXSILAN AL-0500 saves on energy costs. When spraying, dipping or roll coating its application is at or near room temperature.
The trade secret ingredient (Cas-No. 735517-5062P) in Oxsilan AL-0500 was thoroughly tested by the US Army in a product then called Oakite Final Rinse (See: Technical Report ARCCD-TR-92002 pp. 14-15) and was selected above two other top competitor products for use by the US Army. According to this study, the Oakite product had comparable salt spray result to that of chromate conversion and zinc phosphate coatings.
The silane based OXSILAN AL-0500 is now the result of a multi-generation 2 part version with improvements exceeding the results in the US Army 1992 study mentioned above. Part B, called OXSILAN AL-500B, is an acidic solution also containing another important trade secret ingredient (Cas-No. 735517-5168P) thus carrying even further improvements to final results. Part B is used in controlling optimal pH as well.
PRIMARY APPLICATION
Parts that are to be processed and coated must be cleaned with Ardrox 6333A solution (or comparable cleaner) and then thoroughly rinsed with DI or RO water. (Some parts may require acid pickling and/or deoxidizing subject to the substrate composition, condition and/or performance requirements.) See official OXSILAN AL-0500 Process instructions for more precise details and requirements.
Bath Make-up
1. It is important to make sure the tank is clean. No sludge, scale or any other type of contamination should be present (Please see Chemetall's Spray Washer Preventative Maintenance Guide).
2. Fill the tank to 80% capacity with DI or RO water.
3. With good mixing, quickly add 1.6% by volume part B, OXSILAN AL-500B. Thoroughly mix. (If part B is added after part A, precipitation of important ingredients are likely to drop out of solution when mixing, therefore add part A only after part B has been added and mixed well. Earlier versions of the bath make-up instructions says the opposite. Disregard the earlier published instructions prior to 2011 regarding this step.)
4. Now add 8.5% by volume part A OXSILAN AL-0500A. Thoroughly mix.
5. Add the DI or RO water to the bath and bring to the final operational level to equal the final concentrations of each part A and B.
6.Check the pH. It needs to remain at 4.0 or less. Do not allow the pH to get above 4.5. If it approaches 4.5 then add more part B. If the pH is between 3 to 4, it is highly likely you have the right ratio of part B and part A.
If flakes appear, the bath becomes like snow in a Christmas snow globe, then important ingredients have likely fallen out of solution and a new bath will need to be made. The cause is likely because at some point the pH of the bath exceeded 4.5 for a significant amount of time, even a few hours is cause enough.
It is also very important to keep out contamination. Use a TDS for evaluation of your cleaning bath solution. The TDS should read between 200-300 ppm. If it exceeds 500 then time to change cleaning bath.
You can also evaluate the OXSILAN bath with a TDS. Your original bath make us should read close to 28,000 ppm. If over time it exceeds this or your original value by 15%, e.g. 33,000 ppm. Then this is also a very good indication to change out the OXSILAN bath. For the best pricing and value of a new TDS visit NALTIC Home Page www.naltic.com and in the main search drop-down box, select "Industrial & Scientific". Then type TDS in the search field below. A number of choices will populate.
